Beth Shapeero presents five new large-scale screenprinted monoprints at Glasgow Print Studio this July. Working in concentrated bursts of frenetic activity, Shapeero describes An Afternoon as a screenprinting “slot” - a fast-paced session in which an entire body of work is produced in a single sitting.
Each print is a unique monoprint, created using the same stencils in shifting configurations. Shapes are layered, repeated and overlapped to the point of technical mishaps and productive messiness, resulting in an unruly and energetic collection of works.
For Shapeero, printing is an act of play and discovery. Ghost prints, overloaded ink, traces of sponge-cleaning and motifs colliding in unexpected ways generate effects that cannot be controlled, anticipated or reproduced. The process embraces chance, allowing each work to emerge through experimentation rather than predetermined outcomes.
Through this playful approach, Shapeero explores themes of embodiment, repetition and human connection. Vessel-like forms become stand-ins for the body: containers for emotion, memory, tension, joy and contradiction. Her works reflect on the strange bodies we inhabit, the ways we overlap with one another, and the weight of experience that we carry within us.
